Narrative

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has revealed to the BBC that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was given an insulin injection by prison officials after his blood sugar levels spiked.

After his arrest on March 21, Kejriwal was shifted to Delhi’s Teehad Jail.

Officials are accusing Kejriwal, who fought against corruption in the past, now he is involved in corruption. However, Kejriwal denies the allegations.

His arrest ahead of the country’s most crucial parliamentary elections has left many in shock.

Critics say that these steps are being taken before the elections, which are being targeted by Kejriwal and some other opposition parties, with political malice. It is said that this is against the concept of equality for all in the parliamentary elections. However, the central government says that the investigating agencies are doing their work.

Kejriwal is suffering from diabetes. Party supporters are worried about his health after he was taken to jail.

On the other hand, war of words is going on between AAP, Jail authorities and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in this matter.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is alleging that Kejriwal is eating a lot of mangoes and sweets in the jail, resulting in high blood sugar levels, and that he is doing this just to get bail.

However, AAP leaders and Kejriwal deny these allegations. Moreover, it is said that Tihad Jail authorities are showing negligence in providing him treatment and that is why his blood glucose levels are increasing.

Last Monday, Kejriwal wrote a letter to the prison authorities that despite asking for insulin for the past ten days, it was not given.

“I showed my high blood sugar levels to the doctor who came to see me. I told them that there are three spikes between 250 and 320 every day,” Kejriwal said in the letter.

A blood sugar level between 140 mg/dL is considered normal.

In the letter, Kejriwal said that before breakfast, blood glucose levels are between 160 and 200 mg/dL. Normally it should be between 70 and 100 mg/dL.

However, jail officials say that he was not given insulin as he did not ask the doctors to give him insulin during the video consultation.

A court on Tuesday directed Delhi AIIMS experts to ascertain the drugs to be given to him. AAP Spokesperson Pritam Pal Singh told BBC that the insulin needle was given on Monday evening.

AAP is alleging that BJP is behind Kejriwal’s lack of treatment.

CM needs insulin. But the officials working for the BJP are preventing him from receiving insulin,” said AAP leader Saurabh Bhardwaj in a statement.

However, BJP says that AAP is trying to gain sympathy during elections.

Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva recently spoke to NDTV.

It is true that Kejriwal has diabetes. But his blood glucose is under control in jail,” he said.

Kejriwal is the third AAP leader to be arrested in the Delhi liquor policy case. However, Kejriwal says his arrest is illegal. He says that the charges against him are being framed fraudulently and the ED is failing to prove them.
