Heat wave warning in three districts, heat up to 41 degrees; Yellow alert in 12 districts

Thiruvananthapuram: The Central Meteorological Department has issued a heatwave warning for Kollam, Thrissur and Palakkad districts. The warning says to be cautious as heatwave conditions will prevail in various areas of Kollam, Thrissur and Palakkad districts on Sunday and Monday.

The heat wave warning is based on the extreme heat recorded for consecutive days and the temperature will rise up to 41 degree Celsius in Palakkad district and 40 degree Celsius in Kollam and Thrissur districts in the next few days. A heat wave is a situation that calls for extreme caution. Due diligence should be exercised by public and non-governmental institutions. You are more prone to sunstroke and sunburn. The warning states that sunburn can even lead to death.

Other Guidelines:

Avoid going out during the day as much as possible.

Completely stop all outdoor work, sports, and other activities that expose the body to direct sunlight.

Drink plenty of water.

Go out only for essentials. Always use umbrella and footwear when going out.

Those who engage in strenuous activities should take breaks and rest.

Avoid alcohol, carbonated drinks and tea coffee completely during the day as they cause dehydration.

Due to continuous use of electrical devices, they get hot and the wire melts and there is a risk of fire, so they should be turned off after use in offices and homes. Keep fans, lights and ACs switched off at night in offices and rooms that are not in use.

Ensure air circulation at home, office and workplace.

Fire risk is high in markets, buildings, dumping yards, areas where there are piles of garbage and dry grass. A fire audit should be conducted at these places and proper safety precautions should be taken. Those who live near them and run establishments should be especially careful.

Job security workers, journalists, outdoor workers and police officers should use umbrellas from 11 am to 3 pm and avoid direct sun exposure. Help the general community prevent dehydration by providing drinking water to those who are engaged in work.

School authorities and parents should pay special attention to the students. Children should avoid or schedule programs that expose them to more sunlight. Schools taking children on field trips between 11 am to 3 pm should ensure that children are not exposed to direct heat.

Special provision should be made for bed-ridden patients, elderly, pregnant women, children, differently-abled persons and those suffering from disabilities due to other diseases.

All public events should be postponed to evenings.

The public should exercise self-restraint and stay safe as much as possible

High Temperature Warning – Yellow Alert

A high temperature warning has been issued in other districts till Thursday. According to the Central Meteorological Department, the maximum temperature may rise to 38°C in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Kozhikode and Kannur districts, 37°C in Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Malappuram and Kasaragod districts and 36°C in Thiruvananthapuram district (3-5°C more than normal). Due to high temperature and humid air, these districts, except the hilly areas, are also likely to experience hot and humid conditions during these days, the warning said.
