Thiruvananthapuram: Famous theater and film actor Kochu Preman (KS Premkumar) passed away. He was 68 years old. He died in a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram. He was being treated for a respiratory illness.

Kochu Preman’s first film in which he came into acting through drama was ‘Evhu Laharar’ which was released in 1979. Rajasena is known for his roles in movies. Kochupreman acted in 250 films in Malayalam cinema and was also active in tele-serials.

He was born on June 1, 1955 in Thiruvananthapuram, Payat, to Sivarama Shastri and Kamal. Kochu Preman completed his primary education at Peyad Govt. School and graduated from MG College, Thiruvananthapuram.

He wrote and directed a play for the first time when he was in high school. After its success, he composed a second play called Ushnarasi. The dramas were telecasted by Aakashvani’s program Ithali.

Jagathy became active when she acted in the drama Jwalamukhi directed by NK Achari for Thiruvananthapuram Kavita stage. After this, she also acted in Gayathri Theatres’ play Anamika. Later, he worked for around ten drama committees like Sangha Chetana and Kalidasa Kala Kendra.

Kochu Preman hit the hearts of theater lovers through Kerala Theatres’ Amritham Gamaya, Venjaramoodu Sanghachetana’s Swathi Thirunal, Indulekha and Rajan P Dev’s Adityamangalam Aryavaidyasala.

Famous director JC Kuttikkad, who saw the play written and directed by Kochu Preman, gave him an opportunity to move from play to cinema.

Kochu Preman’s first movie was the movie Yehu Lakarkar which was released in 1979. In 1997, Kochupreman acted in Rajasena’s Dilliwala Prince and did eight films with Rajasena. In 1997, he played a very prominent role in Sathyan Anthikad’s film Dadan Kuttiyaal Aath.

It was in 1997 when he acted in Rajeev Anchal’s Guru that he proved that he was not an actor who only handled comedy roles. Kochupreman became a busy actor in Malayalam cinema after getting noticed for his role in the 2003 film Glujum directed by Jayaraj.

Kochupreman won the National Film Award for Best Actor for his role in the 2016 film Rupantaram. Amitabh Bachchan, Mammootty and Kochupreman were among the three who reached the final stage.
