Chandigarh. Doctors at a private hospital in Mohali have saved the life of a 62-year-old patient by transplanting both his kidneys. The team of doctors told the Chandigarh Press Club on Monday that a 73-year-old patient was admitted to the hospital with acute hemorrhagic stroke on September 2, 2023. The patient did not recover and became brain dead after five days. The family was informed about the patient’s condition, after which they expressed their desire to donate his organs. After this a team of doctors was formed.
The organs were then retrieved by the transplant surgery team of Dr. Sunil Kumar, Dr. Sahil Ralli and Dr. Iqbal Singh. It was decided to implant both kidneys in the patient considering his advanced age (above 60) with history of hypertension, stroke and creatinine of 1.9 mg/dL. Both the corneas were donated to PGIMER, Chandigarh. On the other hand, a 62-year-old male was suffering from chronic kidney disease for the last five years and was undergoing dialysis for the last nine months. The kidney transplant surgery team included Dr. Sunil Kumar and Dr. Sahil Ralli, Dr. Amit Nagpal, Head, Team Anesthesia, who performed the 17-hour long marathon surgery. In this, dual kidney transplant was done in the patient. Meanwhile, Bhavneet Bharti, Director Principal, Dr. BR Ambedkar State Institute of Medical Sciences, Mohali, said that organ donation is a selfless act that saves lives and brings hope to the needy.
