Threat of ‘Mandus Cyclone’ looms in Tamil Nadu, IMD issues heavy rain alert for next three days

Chennai. Once again there is a threat of heavy rains in South India. The low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal has now turned into a deep pressure. It is likely to bring moderate to heavy rains over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry as soon as it turns into Cyclonic storm Mandous. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy rain is forecast for the next three days as it reaches southwest Bay of Bengal, north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry and southern coasts of Andhra Pradesh. Winds can run at a speed of 70 kmph on December 9
According to the IMD, the cyclonic storm ‘MANDUS’ with a wind speed of 70 kmph will cross north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coast between Puducherry and Sriharikota around midnight of December 9. The IMD announced on Thursday that Cyclone Mandus (pronounced Man-Dous) lay 500 km southeast of Karaikal and 580 km from Chennai. Under its influence, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Chennai and other districts of Tamil Nadu during the next two days.

The storm is very likely to move west-northwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and south Andhra Pradesh coasts between Puducherry and Sriharikota with a wind speed of 65-75 kmph on the midnight of 9th December . As a result, light to moderate rainfall is likely at a few places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal till December 11. According to a meteorological department bulletin, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places over Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur and Pudukkottai on Thursday. Heavy rainfall is expected in Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Tiruchirappalli, Sivagangai and Ramanathapuram.

NDRF teams deployed
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been deployed in the state and Puducherry. While six teams have been deployed in Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai and Chennai districts. Three have been deployed in the Union Territory, two in Puducherry and Karaikal.

Rain forecast in these states
According to the Meteorological Department and Skymet Weather, light to moderate rain and heavy rain are possible at a few places over Andaman and Nicobar Islands today. Rain activities will intensify over Tamil Nadu and South Andhra Pradesh on December 8 and 9. Moderate to heavy rain with one or two very heavy falls very likely over Coastal Tamil Nadu and South Coast of Andhra Pradesh. Light to moderate rain with few heavy falls are possible over Interior Tamil Nadu and Rayalaseema on 9th December. A fresh western disturbance is likely to give light to moderate rain and snow over Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh between December 8 and 11. Light rain and snow may occur in the upper reaches of Uttarakhand.

It rained in these states last day
According to skymet weather, during the last 24 hours, Andaman and Nicobar Islands received light to moderate rain with some heavy rains. Lakshadweep received light rains. Rest of the country experienced dry weather. The air quality index of Delhi and NCR and Mumbai remained in the very poor category.
