People should stay away from beaches on December 9: Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner

The Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner discussed with the officials regarding the precautionary measures to be taken in view of the cyclonic storm. The Chennai Corporation has also asked people not to visit the beaches on December 9. At the same time, parking of vehicles in open areas has also been prohibited. Meanwhile, Education Minister A Namassivam said all schools and colleges in Puducherry and Karaikal would remain closed on Friday in view of the cyclone.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted on Friday morning that the Severe Cyclonic Storm MANDUS would move west-northwestwards with speed of 65-75 kmph over north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coast between Puducherry and Sriharikota. Will cross at midnight on 9 December with wind of . Earlier the IMD had predicted that the cyclonic storm is likely to intensify further by Friday morning.

More than 5,000 relief camps opened

According to the information given by the state government, more than 5,000 relief camps have been opened in the cyclone-prone districts, in which people evacuated from low-lying areas have been kept. All basic amenities including food, drinking water and health have been provided to the people living in the camp. A round-the-clock control room has also been opened to monitor the effect of the rains, which will keep an eye on the heavy rains for the next two days and its impact.
