Mumbai: Keeping in mind the upcoming elections, the Mumbai Congress has set the North Indian OBC agenda. Sanjay Nirupam, the most active North Indian leader of the Congress in Mumbai, is behind setting this agenda. The agenda is to give the benefit of OBC reservation to those who are originally from the OBC category of North India who live in Mumbai. For this, the demand of census of OBC people living in Mumbai has been raised in Nirupam. He says that people who get the benefits of OBC category in states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand etc. should also get it in Maharashtra. These people are deprived of the benefits of the OBC category because their surnames do not match the list here, while the profession of Carpenter in Maharashtra and Vishwakarma in North India is traditionally the same.

Nirupam argues that most people in the OBC category are identified by their profession. Therefore the OBC category living in Mumbai should also be given the benefit of OBC by dividing them into their categories on the basis of their profession.

‘OBC Registration of North Indian residing in Mumbai’

Nirupam said in a conversation with NBT that if the government does not conduct a census of North Indian OBCs, then he will start this work himself under the banner of Congress and register the North Indian OBCs living in Mumbai.

Nirupam said that it will start with the North Indian Socio-Cultural Conference which is going to be held at Ozone Maidan in Goregaon West on Tuesday. A resolution in this regard will be passed in consultation with the North Indian community in the conference. During this time, the government will be demanded to conduct a census of the North Indian OBC community to determine the category based on their occupation and not to deprive the OBC class of benefits. The second biggest issue in the conference will be the demand for regularization of One Plus One slums in Mumbai. The slums of Mumbai are largely inhabited by North Indians. In SRA and other development schemes, only the ground floor of the huts is being given the benefit, but due to the large size of the family, most of the huts have become one plus one. Apart from this, the implementation of hawker law in Mumbai and the arbitrary challan of the traffic police on the auto drivers of Mumbai will also be discussed.

Compensation from OBC

Congress is trying to set the North Indian OBC agenda under a deliberate decision in view of the upcoming Lok Sabha, Vidhan Sabha and municipal elections. In Mumbai and Greater Mumbai (MMR), the total North Indian population is around 50 lakh, of which around 60 to 65 percent are OBCs. It seems that the Congress has understood that the upper class of North India, especially the people of UP, has slipped out of its hands and become a voter of the BJP. That is why Congress is trying to compensate the OBC category.
