Chandigarh, February 25 (IANS). Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) Haryana unit president and former MLA Nafe Singh Rathi was shot dead by unknown assailants in Jhajjar district of the state on Sunday. Rathi was INLD MLA from Bahadurgarh in the district, where he was attacked in the evening when he was going somewhere in an SUV.

INLD spokesperson Rakesh Sihag said two others traveling with him were also killed in the attack, while two others were seriously injured.

One of the party workers who died has been identified as Jaikishan.

The injured, including the former MLA, were taken to the nearby Brahma Shakti Sanjeevani Hospital for treatment, where Rathi was declared brought dead.

A police officer said that the attackers were in a car. The exact reason for the crime is not yet known. He said that “property dispute seems to be the motive behind the crime”.

Gangster Lawrence Bishnoi and his close aide Kala Jathedi are suspected to be behind this attack.

Jhajjar Superintendent of Police Arpit Jain told the media that Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) and Special Task Force (STF) teams have started investigating the case.

INLD leader Abhay Chautala accused the BJP-JJP government of failing to provide security to Rathi despite the threat to his life. They demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Home Minister Anil Vij over the crime.

Two-time chief minister and Congress leader Bhupinder Hooda said Rathi’s murder reflected the deteriorating law and order situation in the state.
