New Delhi ∙ The central government has sent a letter to the states suggesting that the minimum age limit for first class admission should be raised to 6 years from the new academic year. The new letter comes in a situation where many states, including Kerala, have not implemented the instructions given in previous years.

The National Education Policy (2020) has suggested that 6 years of age should be the age for admission to the first class. The Center had asked for this to be implemented in March 2021 and February 2023. Archana Sharma Awasthi, Joint Secretary, Department of School Education in the Union Ministry of Education, has sent another letter the other day as the admission process for the new academic year will begin soon. The letter also said that the guidelines should be published after making changes.

14 states/UTs have raised the age limit to 6. It has been announced that states including Bengal will implement this from the coming academic year. 3–6 years are Nursery and KG level as per National Education Policy.

There is no such thing in Kerala: Minister

Thiruvananthapuram – Minister V. Shivankutty has informed that Kerala will not implement the central directive this year. Central education policy cannot be fully implemented here. There is disagreement on many of the proposals. The matter has been informed to the Center before. If the proposal to increase the age limit to 6 years is implemented soon, there may be consequences.

The letter said to have been sent by the center has not yet been received. The minister also pointed out that the states are free to take their own decisions regarding education.
