PTI, Bengaluru. An FIR was lodged on Sunday against BJP state office secretary Lokesh Ambekallu and two others for allegedly carrying Rs 2 crore in cash in a car in Karnataka’s Bengaluru Central parliamentary constituency.
The Chief Electoral Officer’s office said the matter came to light on Saturday when the Static Surveillance Team (SST) of Chamarajpet stopped a car carrying Rs 2 crore in cash at 4.05 pm and informed the Income Tax officials.
IT laws were not violated
The Income Tax Department summoned BJP officials and concluded that there was no violation of IT laws as the source of funds was legitimate. But as per the instructions of the Election Commission, cash amount of more than Rs. 10,000 given to party officials and agents of candidates for political activities should be given through check or online mode.
Violation of Commission’s instructions
Since there was a violation of Election Commission instructions, an FIR was registered under sections related to bribery on suspicion that the money could have been used for election inducement. The SST took permission from the court to register an FIR against Lokesh, Venkatesh Prasad and Gangadhar at the police station.
