Around 200 farmers from Tamil Nadu have come to Jantar Mantar in the national capital to protest against the central government on the issue of crop prices and interlinking of rivers. The protesters have come with the skulls and bones of farmers who have committed suicide in the past years.

Speaking to Aaj Tak, Ayyakannu, president of National South Indian River Interlinking Farmers Association, Tamil Nadu, said, ‘During the 2019 elections, the PM had announced that I will double the profits of crops and interlink the rivers.’

‘If demands are not heard then we will contest elections in Varanasi’

Farmers said that earlier they were not allowed to protest and the police stopped them. The farmer leader said, ‘We are living in a democratic country and we have the right to protest, but the police stopped us.’ Later they got permission from the court to demonstrate.

According to farmers, the central government had promised doubling of agricultural income, but crop prices have not been increased. The farmers said that if the government does not listen to their demands, they will go to Varanasi to contest elections against the PM.

‘We are not against PM, we just want help’

Ayyakannu said, ‘If the government does not listen to us, we will go to Varanasi and contest elections against PM Modi.’ Farmers also said that they have protested for their demands earlier also. He said that we are not against the PM or have any connection with any political party. We just want their help.
