The National Crime Records Bureau has published the statistics of suicides in India in the year 2021. According to this data, India’s suicide rate increased from 11.3 percent in 2020 to 12 percent in 2021. That is, the number of suicides which was 1,53,052 in 2020 was reported as 1,64,033 in the following year.
State-wise, Maharashtra stands at 22,207, Tamil Nadu at 18,925, Madhya Pradesh at 14,965, West Bengal at 13,500 and Karnataka at 13,056. These are the top 5 states with the most suicides.
The number of female suicides across India is reported to be 45,026. Marriages are the most important event that determines the life course of women in our country. 4069 women committed suicide across India due to marriage-related incidents. Out of this, Madhya Pradesh recorded the highest number of 871, followed by Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal with 662 and 603 respectively.
Tamil Nadu is at the 7th position in this ranking. 148 women committed suicide in Tamil Nadu due to marriage. It is 154 in the Union Territory of Delhi. It can be seen that the status of Tamil Nadu is relatively higher.
A total of 417 women died due to their work and work-related problems, and 4243 women died under the category of unknown causes.
Suicide of Daily Labourers:
This statistic reveals that the suicide rate among daily wage workers is very high. The number of daily wage earners who committed suicide in 2021 alone is reported to be 42,004. This figure is 25.06 per cent of the country’s total number of suicides of 1,64,033.
The number of suicides of daily wage earners increased from 37,666 in 2020 to 42,004 in 2021. In Tamil Nadu, 7,673 daily laborers have committed suicide. Tamil Nadu is followed by Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh with 5,270 and 4,657 respectively.
Last year alone, 10,881 farmers committed suicide. Out of this, 5,318 people farmed with their own or leased land. It is noteworthy that 5,563 people are agricultural labourers. Agricultural suicide accounted for 6.6 percent of the total suicides reported in 2021. This includes 653 women farmers.
State-wise, the highest number of farmer suicides was recorded in Maharashtra at 4064, followed by Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh at 2169 and 1065 respectively. 599 farmers committed suicide in Tamil Nadu during this period. This is also less than other states.
Based on the data released by the National Crime Records Bureau, agricultural suicides accounted for 6.6 percent of the total number of suicides in the country in 2021. Similarly, the suicide rate of daily wage earners is 25.06 percent.
It can be seen that the number of suicides of daily wage laborers is 4 times more than the number of suicides of farmers. This statistic reveals that the government should focus more on livelihood schemes for daily wage earners.
