Guntur East Politics: It is a good thing that major parties are favoring women candidates, activists of both parties say. These women are not only highly educated but also of mature age.
It is an unofficial reserved constituency. For several years, Muslim minority leaders have been contesting from major parties as candidates. But this time, women are saying to contest from this constituency. The ruling party workers are whispering that the deputy mayor is the reason for this. If everything goes as planned, this time only women will contest there as candidates. For several years in Guntur East Constituency, the main political parties have been fielding Muslim candidates. Because there is a large number of Muslim voters in this constituency. There are about sixty five thousand minority votes. That is why YCP candidate Mustafa won in the last two elections. Nazir Ahmad, who lost the last election, is in charge of TDP.
However, since the YCP came to power, many minority leaders have remained in the party. As a part of this, former corporator Sheikh Shaukat Kumar was elected as Deputy Mayor of Sheikh Sajeela. She has been actively participating in party activities since last year. Shaukat also contested from PRP as an MLA candidate and lost. Sajila, who is currently the Deputy Mayor, is thinking of contesting as an MLA if she gets a ticket in the next election. Although Mustafa, who is currently an MLA, is active in the party, there are criticisms that there is a lot of interference from his family members. In the same way, voters talk that some opposition has naturally arisen against him as he was elected as an MLA twice.
It is being spread that Sajeela is telling the party leaders to give her MLA ticket this time, giving such reasons. Alert MLA Mustafa is taking precautions. Mustafa is heating up the political scene with the formula that a woman should be checked by another woman. They are trying to bring his daughter Fatima into the ring. As a part of this, Fatima was also given an opportunity to speak in the plenary held last month. Activists believe that the power struggle has started in the ruling party.
MLA Mustafa is also expressing dissatisfaction over Sajila’s participation in all the programs in recent times. What if..they started trying to get tickets for whom the election time is nearing. Due to this, the demands of giving ticket to women have gained momentum in TDP too. The present in-charge Naseer Ahmed is active in the party. Leading party programs. But it is being circulated that former Tadikonda Mandal MPP and current Telugu Women’s General Secretary Rizwana is asking to give them a chance if the ruling party favors a woman candidate. Rizwana wants to give a chance to the ruling party to rise to the top.
The activists of both the parties say that it is a good thing that the main parties are favoring women candidates. It is expected that these women are not only highly educated but also of a mature age which will be useful for the development of the constituency. But we have to wait and see to what extent women will get opportunities in the traditional constituency.
