Kottayam ∙ Mary Roy (89), an educationist and well-known women’s welfare activist, passed away. It was Mary Roy, the founder of the famous Pallikkutam School in Kottayam, who paved the way for the Supreme Court ruling that daughters have equal rights in the inheritance of the father’s property under the Christian Succession Act. Husband is late Rajeeb Roy. Arundhati Roy and Lalit Roy are the children of famous writer and Booker Prize winner.

Kottayam’s first school Rev. The grandson of Rao Bahadur John Kurien School founder John Kurien and P.V. Mary Roy was born in Aymanat, Kottayam in 1933, the daughter of Isaac. Schooling was at Delhi Jesus Mary Convent. Graduated from Queen Mary’s College, Chennai. Mary Roy married Rajib Roy, a Bengali, whom she met while working as a secretary in a company in Calcutta. Due to problems in family life, he returned with his children and settled in his father’s house in Ooty.

Disputes over that house reached the court. After Mary Roy’s legal battle, the Supreme Court gave a landmark judgment that the Travancore Christian Succession Act of 1916 was invalid and that sons and daughters had equal rights to the property of the father who died intestate. Mary Roy later returned the house she had won through the case to her brother. Later, Mary Roy clarified that she did not go to court against her brother and sought justice, the children are equal, the idea that the girl is a second bed should change, it was only a war for that.

Corpus Christi, a school established in Kottayam in 1967, later became known as Pallikkutam. The school building was designed by renowned architect Larry Baker. The school is very popular today because it broke the traditional concepts of education. Arundhati Roy has dedicated her first booker prize winning novel ‘God of Small Things’ to her mother.
