New Delhi: Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be on a three-day visit to India from September 5 and will discuss issues related to bilateral relations with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Ministry of External Affairs gave this information. Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi told the weekly press briefing that Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be on an official visit to India from September 5-8. During her visit, Prime Minister Hasina will also call on President of India Draupadi Murmu and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, he said.

Bagchi said Sheikh Hasina will hold bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during her visit. He said that during his visit to India, he is likely to visit Ajmer. He said that high level contacts between the two countries have increased in recent years. The two countries have historical and cultural ties which are progressing in the spirit of mutual respect. This will be Hasina’s first visit to India after the year 2019.

Recently, a Bangladesh Foreign Ministry official had told that during the talks between the two prime ministers, the issue of defense cooperation and stability in South Asia will be the most emphasis apart from the pending and regular bilateral issues. Bangladesh Prime Minister’s visit to India comes at a time when Dhaka approached the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a loan to stabilize its foreign exchange reserves in view of the threat posed to its economy due to the global economic crisis. Earlier, officials had said that Bangladesh wanted to initiate negotiations for the India-Bangladesh Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). A few days back, the 38th Ministerial-level meeting of the Joint Rivers Commission was held on the sharing of river waters between India and Bangladesh. Issues like water distribution of rivers Teesta, Ganga etc. were also discussed in this. The two sides had also finalized a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for water sharing of the Kushiyara River.
