TDP opposes setting up of BDP in Andhra citing environmental damage

Amaravati, Sep 1 (PTI) The main opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in Andhra Pradesh has opposed the setting up of a ‘Bulk Drug Park’ (BDP) in Kakinada district for the purpose of making medicines. The TDP claims that this drug manufacturing unit will harm the environment and affect the livelihood of farmers and fishermen in the area.

Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council Yanamala Ramakrishnudu said food production from the pharmaceutical unit BDP could also be put at risk as thousands of acres of cultivable land would be adversely affected.

In a letter to the Joint Secretary of the Central Drugs Department on Thursday, Yanamala underlined the danger of the proposed BDP and sought the intervention of the Center to stop it immediately.

He also sent a copy of the letter to the chairman of the National Green Tribunal. On August 30, the Drugs Department had informed that the Central Government has given in-principle approval for setting up of BDP on more than 2000 acres of land in Thongyi mandal of Kakinada district.

Earlier, BDPs have been set up in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh under the scheme brought by the Union Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers.

Under the scheme, Andhra Pradesh will be given an assistance of Rs.1000 crore for creating BDP infrastructure.
