Earlier, on Friday, under the BJP’s Lok Sabha migration scheme, Nirmala Sitharaman inspected ration shops in Birkur village of Zaheerabad parliamentary constituency. During this, Sitharaman asked the beneficiaries, “How much do you pay for a kilo of rice, which costs Rs 35 in the market?” In response to this, some people there said – ” 1 rupee.” After this, Sitharaman asked Collector Jitesh V Patil how much of the remaining Rs 34 was borne by the state.
As soon as the collector started answering, Sitharaman said, “Collector, you should answer clearly. You are an IAS officer belonging to Telangana cadre. .Do you need time to think about your answer? Before addressing my media, you should prepare your answer in these half hours. I can tell him that even the collector himself could not answer it immediately, he found it difficult and he looked for the answer. She then tells him that the price of PDS rice is Rs 35 per kg, out of which the Center bears Rs 29 and the state government Rs 5. After this people get one kg of rice for 1 rupee.

Later in the evening, Sitharaman addressed a press conference along with other BJP leaders. Meanwhile, when asked about the incident, he reportedly said, “I am not here to judge the conduct of any collector. My language was not offensive or unparliamentary to the collector. If anyone thinks that it was not correct or that my language was offensive, that is their opinion.”
