Jammu, State Bureau : In Ladakh, which is called the land of the moon, the zeal of cycling is speaking loudly. Cycling in Ladakh has got a new identity in the world with the MTB Eliminator World Cup being organized for the first time in the country. Several cyclists who arrived from Leh and Kargil, along with cyclists from other parts of the country, also showed stamina in the cycling trials that started in the morning before the MTB Eliminator World Cup match on Sunday. Hundreds of Ladakhi youths also demonstrated their enthusiasm for this sport by participating in the Cycling Joy Ride which started from the main market of Leh.
The trials of female and male cyclists were flagged off by Ladakh MP Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, Tashi Gyalsan, Chief Executive Councilor, Ladakh Atnamus Hill Development Council, SS Khandare, Additional Director General of Police, Ladakh. A large number of people of Ladakh were also present on this occasion along with senior officers of Ladakh Police and Civil Administration. Meanwhile, before the start of the Eliminator MTB World Cup competition, a joy ride was organized for the Ladakhi youth.
People’s interest towards cycling has increased rapidly in Ladakh during the last few years. This is the reason that now with the organization of the Cycling World Cup in the region, important action has been taken in the direction of promoting tourism along with adventure sports in the region. A large number of tourists along with local residents were present in the main market of Leh to watch the World Cup trials on Sunday.
Initiatives to make Carbon Neutral State: The Ladakh Police is promoting cycling in the region as part of a campaign to make the region a carbon neutral state. In such a situation, by organizing Cycling World Up, people of Ladakh are being motivated to work for the betterment of health and environment by cycling instead of petrol-powered vehicles. Cycling has become increasingly popular after Ladakh became a union territory. In such a situation, since the year 2020, two major cycling competitions have been organized in the area.
Police had organized the Ultimate Ladakh Cycling Challenge Cup competition: Last year, the Ultimate Ladakh Cycling Challenge Cup competition was organized by the Ladakh Police. Earlier in the year 2020, the first Extreme Ladakh Cycling Challenge was organized. Many eminent cyclists from the country and abroad have participated in these. The Ladakh MTB World Cup is the third major cycling event in the region in two years.
