Shimla. Weather is becoming a hindrance for air services starting between Shimla and Delhi, the capital of Himachal Pradesh. Due to poor visibility at Shimla airport, trial landing is not taking place at present. Earlier flights could not start from September 6. Now the schedule of flights has been fixed again on 26 September.

Visibility of at least five kilometers for trials is also not there in the monsoon season. It is worth noting that Alliance Air has to run ATR aircraft on this route. It is also planned to run from Shimla to Kangra and Kullu along with Delhi Shimla. However, in return, the company has also sought Viability Gap Funding of around Rs 11 crore from the state government.

This file is pending in the Finance Department. It is yet to be decided on this. The team of Directorate General of Civil Aviation has also inspected Jubbarhatti Airport. Approval has been given by the Directorate General to start air services. The ministry had earlier planned to start the Delhi-Shimla air service on August 15 on the occasion of Independence Day. It was postponed till August 22 without getting the approval of the Directorate General, but still bad weather is hindering it. Devesh Kumar, Secretary, Tourism and Civil Aviation, said that air services would be restored from Shimla airport after re-trial.

It should be noted that air services from Shimla’s Jubbarhatti airport are closed since March 2020. The expansion work of Jubbarhatti airport adjacent to Shimla has been completed. The runway strip of the airport has been increased to 1309 metres. Till February 2020, the facility of ATR 42 (500) aircraft was available. Due to the Corona crisis, the central government had banned air services. Meanwhile, Air India’s lease of Alliance Air’s ATR 42 aircraft expired. The lease was not renewed even in 2021. Prior to March 2020, Jubbarhatti airport used to have 30 to 35 passengers in a 42-seater aircraft coming from Delhi. Due to the short take-off run for the return from Shimla, the flight used to carry only 10 passengers.
