New Delhi, Sep 9 (PTI) A 100-foot-tall truck carrying huge granite boulders for Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s statue from Telangana to Delhi had to “temporarily” break down gates at some toll plazas on highways to pass through. They can be widened to allow a passage for the truck.

‘Telephone Black Stone’ was supplied by Delhi-based Granite Studio India from a mine in Khammam, Telangana. Rajat Mehta, director of Granite Studio India, said a “temporary road” had to be built to take it from the mine to the highway.

“It was a huge block of stone, weighing 280 metric tonnes (MT) and 32 feet in length,” Mehta told PTI on Friday. It was 11 feet high and 8.5 feet wide, in which the image of Netaji was made. But many challenges were faced in bringing it to Delhi.

Huge granite was carved to produce a statue of Bose, which weighed 65 metric tons.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday evening unveiled a statue of Bose, installed in the historic chhatri in front of the India Gate here.

The Culture Ministry had earlier said that the big truck was specially designed to carry the granite section from Telangana to the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) with a distance of 1665 kms.

“The stretch from the mine to the national highway was ‘kutcha’ and a temporary road had to be built in a short span of time to carry the stone to the highway,” Mehta said. On the way, 42 tires of the 100-foot-long truck burst and it was damaged for 72 hours. The truck passed through five states to reach Delhi.

According to the Ministry of Culture, a team of sculptors made an “intense effort” to carve the 28-foot-tall statue of Bose and spent a total of 26,000 man-hours on it.

Mehta said, “Bringing the huge stone to Delhi was not an easy task. The truck was so huge that the gates of some toll plazas had to be temporarily demolished at several places on the highways, especially where there were more turns. The purpose of the demolition was to widen the gates so that the truck could pass through without the risk of colliding with anything.

According to Mehta, the police received the truck in several border areas after realizing the importance of the huge stone. He said there were four drivers in the truck, who drove it day and night.

Mehta pointed out that there was also an issue that the huge truck had to be driven generally at night, when the road temperature is low. But driving it during day time also caused 42 tires to burst on the way due to heat.
