The Supreme Court on Friday heard petitions challenging the release of 11 convicts accused of gang-rape and multiple murders of Bilkis Bano during the 2002 Gujarat riots. The Supreme Court has given two weeks time to the Gujarat government to reply. A bench comprising Justices Ajay Rastogi and BV Nagaratna directed the Gujarat government to file all the records. Evidence to grant relief to all the accused in the same case… Gujarat government has been asked to file its response within 2 weeks.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court bench heard the petition filed by CPI-M’s former MP Subhasini Ali, journalist Revathi Lal and professor Roop Rekha Verma. Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra also approached the Supreme Court on the issue. The court also asked the petitioners to hand over Malhotra’s copy to the Gujarat government counsel. The Supreme Court directed the state government to place on record all relevant documents including the remission order. It said that the next inquiry will be conducted after three weeks.
