Kerala bagged four gold awards for its responsible tourism mission activities at the ICRT India Subcontinent Awards 2022 organized by the Government of Madhya Pradesh and the International Center for Responsible Tourism (ICRT). This is the first time that Kerala has achieved a hat-trick at an award venue for responsible tourism mission activities.
The Responsible Tourism Mission activities in Kerala have been awarded the gold award in four categories namely plastic waste disposal, water conservation (Water Street Project — Street Project), diversification of the tourism sector and recovery of the tourism sector after covid. By winning the Gold Award, Kerala also qualified to compete for the World Travel Market Award in these four categories.
Responsible Tourism Mission State Coordinator K Rupesh Kumar received the awards on behalf of Kerala from Madhya Pradesh Tourism Minister Usha Thakur at a function held in Bhopal. ICRT Founder and World Travel Market Advisor Dr. Harold Goodwin, ICRT West Africa Founder Adama Ba and Madhya Pradesh Tourism Principal Secretary Sheo Shekhargupta were also present on the occasion.
Tourism Minister Muhammad Riaz said that the state government is successfully making efforts to popularize the tourism process in Kerala. The activities of the responsible tourism mission have become a model for popular tourism activities today. The minister said that this is the recognition it has received.
KS Srinivas, Principal Secretary, State Tourism Department, said that the responsible tourism mission in the state is a model not only for the tourism sector but also for the entire country in terms of waste management. He said that the plans to evolve it beyond mere processing into value-added products differentiates the RT mission.
Kerala Tourism Director PB Nooh said that this award shows the social commitment of the state government, Responsible Tourism Mission and Kerala Tourism. He added that the comments made by the jury on the progress of women in the units of the Responsible Tourism Mission are proud.
Dr. Kerala’s involvement in the field of responsible tourism for the 15th consecutive year is commendable. Judged by a jury chaired by Harold Goodwin. RT Mission’s role in eliminating single-use plastic products in partnership with hotels and resorts, steps taken to minimize the use of plastic bottles, 80 percent of RT Mission units avoiding single-use plastics, and the work done to provide non-plastic eco-friendly products to accommodation units by maximum RT Mission units, all these are the environmental aspects of Kerala tourism. The jury said the steps were indicative of commitment.
Kerala Voyages, Let’s Go for a Camp and Veer Naturals Private Limited also won awards from Kerala.
