Maa Mansa Devi is the daughter of Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati. Her husband is Maharishi Jaratkaru and son is Aastik. It has been told in the Puranas that he was born from the brain of Shiva and that Manasa was more powerful than any poison, hence Brahma named him Vishhari. In the fourth part of Vishnu Purana, there is a description of a Nagkanya, which later became popular as Manasa. In the Brahmavaivarta Purana, there was a Nagakanya, who was a devotee of Shiva and Krishna.

He did penance for many ages and received the knowledge of Vedas and Krishna mantra from Shiva, which later became popular as Kalpataru Mantra. After doing penance in Pushkar, that girl had darshan of Krishna and got the boon of being worshiped from him forever. When Mansa Mata became proud of her powers, Lord Shiva put an end to the pride, then Mansa Mata apologized to Lord Shiva. Then Lord Shiva said that you give back the life of Chandradar. But Mansa was not able to do this. So Mansa Mata realized her mistake and apologized to Bholenath. Then Lord Shiva gave life to Chandradar and also brought alive his seven sons. Lord Shiva gave this boon to Mansa that from today onwards people in the world will worship you in the name of Maa Mansa Devi, their every wish will be fulfilled.
