New Delhi, Hyderabad City, September 23 (Andhra Jyoti): Dr. M. Srinivas from Telangana has been appointed as the Director of the prestigious Delhi AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences). The Cabinet Committee on Appointments (ACC) approved his appointment on Friday. The Central Personnel and Training Affairs Department has issued an order to this effect. It said that he will continue in this post for five years or until Dr. Srinivas attains the age of 65 or until further orders. It is known that the government has already extended the tenure of Dr. Randeep Guleria, who has been serving as Delhi AIIMS chief since March 28, 2017. His tenure ended on Friday. Dr. Srinivas has been working as the Dean of ESIC Medical College and Hospital, Sanat Nagar, Hyderabad since 2016. Before that, he served as a professor in the Department of Pediatric Surgery at AIIMS, Delhi. He came to Hyderabad on deputation and took charge as Dean of ESIC. So far, two Telugus have acted as directors of AIIMS and Delhi. Professor V. Ramalingaswamy was in charge from 1969-79 and Professor P. Venugopal from 2003 to 2008. Dr. Srinivas is the third Telugu person to take up that responsibility. In fact, Dr. Srinivas’ name was not among the names first considered for the post. He is not even applying for this post. The names of Dr. Nikhil Tandon (Head of Department of Endocrinology), Rajesh Malhotra (Chief of Trauma Center, Head of Department of Orthopaedics) and Pramod Garg (Professor of Gastroenterology Department) of AIIMS were considered and sent to the ACC for approval. The ACC, which met under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi on June 20, suggested giving more names. With this, MV Padma Srivastava (Chief of Neurosciences Center) of AIIMS, Dr. Balaram Bhargava, former Director General of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), and Dr. Rakesh Agarwal, Director of Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, Puducherry proposed the names. In the next stage, the names of Dr. Srinivas and Dr. Sanjay Bihari (Director of Sri Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology, Trivandrum) were proposed.
Rajiv Bahl as ICMR DG
New Delhi, September 23: Dr Rajeev Bahl was appointed as the Director General of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on Friday. He also serves as the Secretary of the Health Research Department. Dr. Bahl currently works in Geneva as the Head of Neonatal Research at the World Health Organization. Dr Balram Bhargav’s tenure as Director General ended in July.
