New DelhiThe statement of the Union Tourism Secretary has come to light on Friday on the incident of a group of travelers carrying a jeep inside Pangong Lake in Ladakh. Arvind Singh on Friday said that if this attitude continues, the local community will not welcome tourists in future. During a panel discussion here on the topic Policy Recipe Book for [email protected], Singh said that green and sustainable tourism is one of the priorities of the new National Tourism Policy. He said that the policy is being prepared and it is in the final stages.

A few months back, an undated video went viral on the internet, which showed a group of tourists driving their vehicle in the sensitive lake in Leh. Internet users reacted sharply to this video. Many people had demanded action against these tourists. Known for its clean water, this lake was made popular by the Bollywood film ‘3 Idiots’. A part of the film has been shot on this beautiful lake.

Referring to ‘revenge tourism’, the Union Tourism Secretary told how it has increased the demand. How tourists came in large numbers to the mountainous areas during last summer, when the mercury in the plains was very high. The term ‘revenge tourism’ is used to denote a situation when people travel to escape from their everyday lives in the wake of a situation like the COVID-19 pandemic or lockdown. The event was organized by the Public Affairs Forum of India (PAFI), in which the top tourism ministry official said, “The atmosphere in Kashmir was not very conducive until recently, but a few weeks ago I was there and the private sector Talking to people, they were very positive. He said that a leading hotel chain is going to build a 500-room hotel in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.

The Union Tourism Secretary said that the Group of Secretaries is working on preparing the presentation keeping in mind the target of the next 25 years. Prior to this, the National Tourism Policy was prepared in the year 2002. The Ministry of Tourism had recently said that the National Tourism Policy has been prepared with a holistic approach and strategy to revive India’s tourism sector, so that the target of USD 1000 billion by the year 2047 can be achieved by the tourism sector. Singh said that he wants the number of foreign tourists to increase to 100 million by the year 2047 from the present number of 20 million (pre-Covid-19 period in the year 2019).
