Supreme Court hands over FIRs against Navika Kumar to Delhi Police

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday bundled together the FIRs lodged against journalist Navika Kumar over controversial remarks made by former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Nupur Sharma on Prophet Mohammad and transferred them to Delhi Police.

Navika was the presenter of a discussion on TV in which Nupur Sharma made controversial remarks. A bench of Justices MR Shah and Krishna Murari said that no coercive action will be taken against Navika Kumar for eight weeks so that she can take measures to defend herself in the interim period. It also allowed Navika Kumar to move the Delhi High Court with a request to quash the main FIR.

The Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit of Delhi Police will investigate the matter. The court had on August 8 granted interim relief from arrest to Kumar. The bench had issued notices to the Centre, the West Bengal government and others on Kumar’s plea. Sharma’s remarks about Prophet Mohammad had led to protests across the country and the Gulf countries reacted sharply to it. source language
