Thiruvananthapuram: Writer Satish Babu Payyannoor passed away. He was found dead in a flat in Thiruvananthapuram. He was 59 years old. He lived in a flat in Vanjiyur with his wife. His wife went home yesterday. My wife and relatives did not get on the phone even this afternoon. He was found dead when the police came and opened the flat. The cause of death is not clear. The preliminary assessment is that there is no abnormality. The police said that the cause of death will be known only after receiving the post-mortem report.
He was born in 1963 at Pathiripala in Palakkad district. Studied at Nehru College, Kanhangad and later at Payyannur College. Even during his education, he showed his talent in story, poetry and essay writing. During his college days, he edited and published the first campus newspaper of Calicut University, ‘Campus Times’. After his education, he became an officer in the State Bank of Travancore. He also worked as the editor of the Kasaragod weekly ‘Eyacharcha’. In the 80s, Payyannoor’s works, which were full of periodicals, had won the praise of the readers. He also published many novels such as Peramaram, Photo and other novels like Daivapura, Manja Suryante Naalal, Kudamanikal Kilungu Raavi. He received the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Short Story in 2012 for his short story collection Peramaram. He also received Karur Award, Malayatur Award and Thopil Ravi Award.
A member of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi and the Kerala Film Academy, Satish Babu has directed television films and documentaries. Served as Member Secretary of Bharat Bhavan under Kerala Culture Department for five years. He wrote the screenplay for the movie Nakshatrakudaram which was released in 1992 and was also involved in the writing of the movie Oh Fabi.
