CHENNAI: It is said that the electricity bill is likely to rise again.. Probably from next month, there will be an announcement about the current bill hike.
Considering the financial burden on the Tamil Nadu government and the fact that the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board is running at a heavy loss, the Tamil Nadu government decided to increase the electricity tariff last year.
Accordingly, the Electricity Board has decided to increase the charges for electricity consumption and new connection and submitted petitions to the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission on July 18 seeking permission to increase the charges.
Electricity Charges: However, there was strong opposition from the political parties to increase the electricity tariff. However, compared to other states, the electricity tariff is less in Tamil Nadu. An explanation was given by the Electricity Board that since the electricity tariff has not been increased for the last 8 years, now there is a need to increase the tariff.
After this, the Madurai High Court also lifted the ban imposed on the decision regarding the increase in electricity tariff while the case hearings also took place. Subsequently, the Electricity Regulatory Commission gave permission for the increase in electricity tariff.
Current Bill: A new electricity tariff hike has also come into force in Tamil Nadu.. The electricity tariff for houses has been increased from 12 percent to 52 percent and it has been announced that 100 units of free electricity will continue to be provided to houses. Apart from that, the regulatory authority has also given permission to increase electricity tariff by 6 percent on July 1 every year.
The current bill was increased only last September.. But the regulatory authority has given permission to increase the electricity bill every year in July, and they say that the current bill is likely to be increased this July. Information is leaking.
Fee hike: As on April 2023, the fee should be increased by the rate of inflation or 6 percent, whichever is less. Inflation rate in April this year is 4.70 percent.. which is less compared to 6 percent.. So, from next month, they say there is a lot of possibility that all section fees will be increased by 4.70 percent.
That is, it seems that the current unit fee may increase by 4.70 percent. People are worried that if the electricity bill is raised again, it will become a big crisis when they are already unable to pay the increased electricity bill.
The only way: The power to increase the electricity tariff is vested only in the Electricity Regulatory Commission. Therefore, if the Chief Minister insists to the commission to suspend the order, they say that this electricity tariff hike is unlikely to come now.. What is going to happen? Let’s wait and see…!!
