New Delhi: The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has stated that empiric antibiotic therapy should be done only in emergency situations, before the infection is confirmed.
The ICMR study found that carbapenem, an antibiotic given to ICU patients, is currently not beneficial to a large population. This is because bacteria become resistant to antibiotics when administered uncontrollably. The guidelines provide information on how, how much, and how many days to use antibiotics in each case. Antibiotics may be given directly to immunocompromised and high-risk patients in emergencies such as severe infections and pneumonia. Even then, action should be taken for the secretion test etc.
Antibiotics are not needed for minor fevers, respiratory problems due to viral infections, non-infectious lung diseases, minor skin infections, and mild urinary tract infections.
To watch out for treatment:
∙ Correct dosage, timing and method of administration should be determined beforehand.
∙ Clarity on the obvious symptoms, where the infection starts in the body, what the causative agent is, and an understanding approach to antibiotic effectiveness and resistance is important.
∙ Do not give high potency (high end) antibiotics at once.
∙ Antibiotic treatment should be stopped immediately after it is absolutely confirmed that there is no bacterial infection.
