new study says Painting White on Car Roofs Could Cut Carbon Emissions

We know that white paint on the roof of the house helps to reduce the heat inside the house. But the new discovery is that the same method can be applied in the automotive sector as well. It is reported that by applying white paint on the top of the car, the amount of carbon dioxide (Co2) emitted from the car can be reduced.

In the long term, Raphael Menard, president of the architecture agency AREP (Architecture Research Engagement Post-Carbon), a subsidiary of France’s national railway company SNCF, recommends painting the cars white, according to an article in French newspaper Le Montille.

It is based on the concept of albedo. This change in the automotive sector is on the recommendation of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). This type of modification can be introduced during the mandatory roadworthiness test of vehicles, he said.

In France alone, painting the roofs of entire cars white could save 500 million liters of gasoline a year, said Raphael Menard. Above all, it could reduce the amount of carbon dioxide emitted into the air by one million tons, he said. If it is found to be effective in cars then it can be tested in trucks, buses and trains.

Meanwhile, California announced a few days ago that it would ban the sale of fossil fuel-powered vehicles. California is the first US state to make such a decision. In a recent meeting, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) decided to formulate strict policies focused on banning the sale of gasoline cars by 2035. Also, the board discussed strategies to phase out the cars within the said time frame.

“This is a milestone. This is the most important thing CARB has done in the last thirty years. It’s important not only to California, but to the country and the world,” board member Daniel Sperling said in an interview with CNN.

According to the new rules that will come into effect soon, the board has set interim quotas for zero emission vehicles. By 2026, 35 percent of all new cars, small pick-up trucks and SUVs must be zero-emission.

By 2030, 68 percent of cars should be zero-emission, and by 2035 it will reach 100 percent. Having said that, it is important to note that these interim quotas will not apply to vehicles already in use.
