Visakhapatnam: The Center of Indian Trade Union (CITU) has asked the respective governments to protect the interests of contract workers working in central and state industries. The representatives of Visakhapatnam District CITU Committee expressed their regret over the non-implementation of various legal provisions related to contract workers. To this extent, Visakhapatnam Lok Sabha member MVV Satyanarayana filed a complaint together. He appealed to protect the interests of the contract workers.
The representatives of CITU said that issues like minimum wages, security preferences, ESI payments, holidays and bonuses have come to the attention of the authorities and despite the fact that the contractors of the Visakhapatnam Port Authority are implementing semi-skilled, skilled and highly skilled workers, they are paying minimum wages to 9,000 contract workers. They expressed their concern that the contractors are avoiding paying proper wages due to lack of any provision in this regard.
They alleged that HPCL and Hindustan Shipyard Limited were robbing the contract workers and making them work for 10 hours a day against the rules. Also, he said that not a single contractor in BHEL is paying minimum wages. They expressed regret that the same trend is continuing in the railway department. Apart from this, there are no records of workers’ safety and care being taken.
