‘Smart Boxer’ software to help win medals in boxing: IIT Chennai information

IIT Chennai researchers in collaboration with Inspire Institute of Sports (IIS) are developing advanced boxing analytics software to boost India’s medal haul at the 2024 Olympics.

IIT Chennai’s Center of Excellence for Sports Science and Analytics is developing analytics software called ‘SmartBox’. The analytics platform will provide feedback and performance evaluations through the ‘Internet-of-Things’ using wearable sensors and video cameras. It will help improve the competitiveness of Indian sportspersons.

Inspire Institute of Sports in Bellary, Karnataka will use ‘SmartBox’ to study the performance of boxers. Based on the feedback received through this, changes will be incorporated into the ‘Smartbox’ analytics platform. Hence, this software can be used effectively to help the trainers and boxers.

Ranganathan Srinivasan, Associate Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Chennai, Head, Center of Excellence for Sports Science and Analytics said: SmartBoxer is one of the various initiatives undertaken by IIT Chennai to achieve the Indian government’s ambitious goal of winning more medals in Olympic Games.

How does it work? Based on the Internet-of-Things, gloves with sensors to analyze punch-in speed, sphygmomanometers with wireless foot insoles to record ground reaction force, and wireless EMG to record athletes’ lower body movement. Sensors and kinematic measurement units are used to record movement in the athletes upper body.

Video cameras placed in the boxing ring identify the fighter’s left and right hands and categorize attack, defense and feint. He said that after verification at IIS, IIT Chennai researchers are planning to apply for a patent on ‘Smart Boxer’ in collaboration with IIS.
