Reigning champion Emma Radukanu and former number one Naomi Osaka crashed out in the first round of the US Open tennis tournament.

The US Open, the last Grand Slam tournament of the year, started two days ago in New York City. In women’s singles, 23-time Grand Slam winner and former number one Serena Williams of the United States beat No. 2 seed Annette Kontaveit of Estonia 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-2 to reach the No. 3 seed. advanced to the round.

As the 40-year-old Serena decided to bid farewell to tennis with this US Open tennis series, many fans thronged the stadium to watch her play. In the next round, Serena will face Australian Ajla Domljanovic.

Emma Radukanu failed

Defending champion Emma Raduganu (England) takes on 40th seed Alize Cornet (France) in a women’s singles first round match. In this, the experienced Cornet defeated Raduganu in straight sets 6–3, 6–3. The 19-year-old Raduganu created a new history at last year’s US Open by reaching the main round through the qualifiers and clinching the crown without dropping a set. But could not even get past the first round this season.

It was the 63rd consecutive Grand Slam appearance by 32-year-old Alisse Cornet, who defeated him. She next meets Kateryna Siniakova of the Czech Republic.

Two-time champion and former number one Japan’s Naomi Osaka did not clear the first hurdle. She was defeated by American Danielle Collins in straight sets 7-6 (7-5), 6-3. Similarly, former champion Venus Williams of the United States lost to Alison van Utwanik (Belgium) in straight sets 1-6, 6-7 (5-7). Elsewhere, top stars Sloane Stephens (USA), Petra Kvitova (Czech Republic), Paula Padosa (Spain), Victoria Azarenka (Belarus) and Corbin Muguruza (Spain) tasted victory in their first round.

Nadal fought back and won

In the men’s singles category, 4-time champion Rafael Nadal (Spain) defeated Ringy Hijikata of Australia 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-3. After recovering from the injury, Nadal played with a little difficulty and had to fight for this victory for 3 hours and 8 minutes. He will face Italy’s Fabio Bognini in the 2nd round.

Spain’s ‘Young Storm’ Carlos Algarz was leading 7-–5, 7-–5, 2–-0 in his match against Argentina’s Sebastian Pace when Sebastian withdrew due to a leg injury. Alcaraz was thus declared victorious. The leading players including Svatsman (Argentina), John Isner (USA), Andrey Rublev (Russia), Hurcox (Poland), Cameron Norrie (England), Marin Cilic, Borna Coric (Croatia) successfully advanced to the 2nd round.
