Why the title ’80s Buildup’? When I was thinking of doing something new, I felt like the whole story was done in the eighties. Usually, the flashback scene in the films is shown as it happened at that time. But what about making the whole story as if it were happening in that period? ’80’s Buildup’ is the film that created that.

Is it a story of fans clashing? There was a lot of craze for cinema in the eighties. This is a film made in the background of the fans of that time. It is a match between Kamal fans and Rajini fans. Rajinikanth fan R. Sundarrajan has acted. He is the grandfather of Kamal fan Santhanam. The story is about the conflict between these two people. This is a film that takes place in one day.

Did you say it will also be ‘fantasy’? Oh yes. The story takes place in a death house. Let Emadharman, Chitragupta and Vishitragupta come from the upper world to the house of the inanimate. Did you wait a year for Santhanam call sheet? Usually, if I prepare a story, I usually start shooting in six months. After finishing this story, I told the story that Santhanam Charatan would be correct for it. He enjoyed listening to the story. But, he said that there was no immediate call sheet as he had acted in other films. I also worked in Prabhu Deva. Then, since the story is set in the eighties, I also needed some time for things for that. Then he made another commitment. We have started this film.

There are many actors in the film. Dealing with so many people is difficult or not? No. Each frame will have 15 main actors and 600 junior artists. This is what a film with such a supporting cast would look like. The late actor Mylaswamy left me with a wreath for using more supporting actors. Looking after them was a big job. Because the period film is like that, even if someone forgets and has a cell phone in their pocket, it will flash. Observing it was a big job. Otherwise nothing.

Are you surprised that you completed the shooting in less days? This story is like that. Almost same location. One costume fits everything. So it can be completed quickly. I don’t know if I can finish the other story in such less days. We completed the shoot in less days due to the complete team cooperation from the actors and actresses including the cameraman.

Has Santhanam played a romantic hero? It’s true. He has two fight scenes in this. It’s like an eighties movie. It will be like the fight scenes happening in that time. Background music by Gibran, cinematography by cameraman Jake, editing, everything seems to have brought that period before the eyes. It will be very good if the fans watch the film in the 80s mood.
