Dhruv Jurel continued his fine run with the bat against England and frustrated the visitors with a gritty maiden fifty in Ranchi to keep India in the hunt.

Jurel came in at a time when India found themselves on the ropes as they were 177 for 7, losing Sarfaraz Khan and R Ashwin quickly. Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 73, but none of the other batters got going on the Ranchi track as Shoaib Bashir claimed four wickets on day two.

Jurel joined Kuldeep Yadav in the middle and both batters showed a lot of resilience and ensured India would end the day at 219 for 7. Jurel had started day three on 30 runs off 58 balls, and started off solidly.

The wicketkeeper and Kuldeep kept the scoreboard ticking before Jurel hit the first boundary in the 81st over with a lovely straight drive off Ollie Robinson. Both men would get India past the 250-run mark and also ensured that they were able to keep the demons on the track quiet.

Apart from a half-hearted caught behind appeal down the leg side off Anderson’s bowling, Jurel didn’t look troubled while he was batting. Jurel and Kuldeep’s partnership was finally broken when the spinner was cleaned up by Anderson.

Jurel would get his fifty off 96 balls, with three boundaries and a six to his name.

‘Dhoni fan’ Jurel offers India hope in Ranchi

A self-confessed fan of MS Dhoni, Jurel’s innings has given India hope in Ranchi. Ahead of the match, Jurel said he would like to meet the former India skipper after an international game.

“I was just watching him and I stood up and started thinking is this MS Dhoni standing in front of me. My first interaction with him was in IPL 2021 which was my first season. At that time, I was pinching myself to see whether it is a dream or not. My dream is to meet Mahi bhai especially after the match after an international game. Whenever I have talked to him, I have always learned something new from him so I hope that I get a chance to meet him during the fourth Test at Ranchi,” Jurel said in a video posted by BCCI.

Jurel’s knock would ensure India reduced the deficit below 100. The wicketkeeper provided the same resistance he had shown in Rajkot when India were in a similar situation in the third Test. Jurel would then stitch together a no-nonsense partnership and scored 46. He wouldn’t come in to bat in the second innings.
