Tuesday’s magnitude 6.1 earthquake was epicentered 28 kilometers south of Hualien city and at a depth of 10.7 kilometers, according to the USGS. Half a dozen other earthquakes, ranging in magnitude from 4.5 to six, all occurred near Hualien.
According to Taiwan’s earthquake monitoring center, the initial quake had a magnitude of 6.3. Slight variations in intensity recorded by different monitoring stations are common. The most powerful quakes, measuring 6.0 and 6.3, occurred at 2:26 a.m. and 2:32 a.m., respectively, late Monday, according to the Taiwan center. Authorities have asked people whose homes were damaged in previous earthquakes to stay away from their homes until aftershocks subside. Some people have decided to stay in their cars outside their homes till then. A 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Taiwan in 1999 killed 2,400 people. In recent times, many earthquakes have occurred in the country.
