Rajapalayam: Two people died of electrocution when a chopper hit an electric conductor during the Vinayagar Chaturthi procession held last night (August 31) at Chokanathan Puttur near Rajapalayam in Virudhunagar district.
Ganesha Chaturthi festival was celebrated with much fanfare across the country yesterday. In this case, the Vinayagar Chaturthi Chappara Procession was held last night at Kulalar Street near the bus stand in Sokkanathanam Puttur area. A large number of people, both young and old, participated in the procession.
As it neared Chapparam bus station, it took a left turn. It has hit the big tree there. Then while turning the saber to the right, the plywood placed near it leaned on the saber. Then the flux board also rubbed against the electrical conductor. As a result of this, electricity was also cut off in Chappara, Muneeswaran (24), Marimuthu (33), Selvakrishnan (32) and Chellapandi (42) from Sokkanathan Puthur, who were in the procession, were seriously injured due to electric shock.
All 4 of them were rescued and taken to Sivagiri Government Hospital, Tenkasi district for treatment. Marimuthu and Muneeswaran died without treatment. The other two are undergoing intensive care.
The police have registered a case and are investigating.
On April 27, 11 people, including 2 children, were killed when a chariot was electrocuted in Kalimedu village near Thanjavur.
On July 31 last, the chariot of the ancient temple of Prahadambal in Pudukottai district fell into an accident. One person died and 9 others were injured in the accident.
In this case, another chariot accident has happened. The accident in the Ganesha procession has caused great sadness among the people of Chokanathan Puthur.
