Earlier, between August 23, Tuesday and Saturday, August 27, a total of 13 earthquakes of light intensity have occurred in Doda, Kishtwar, Katra (Reasi) and Udhampur districts of Jammu division. In these officials said that there was no report of any casualty or damage to property during this period.

The continuously shaking earth in Jammu division is indicating danger. According to experts, Chamba, Kishtwar, Udhampur and Katra rest on the tectonic plate, in which earthquake tremors have increased due to increase in pressure. These regions have become more tectonically active over a long period of time and in recent times.

Kishtwar was struck by an earthquake of magnitude 5.7 in 2013.

An earthquake of magnitude 5.7 occurred in the Jangalwar area of Kishtwar in the year 2013. Similarly, an earthquake of magnitude 6.2 in 1962 and 6.4 in 1951 struck Chamba, which had a direct impact on the hilly areas of Jammu and Kashmir. According to GM Bhatt, Professor of the Department of Geology at the University of Jammu, Jammu and Kashmir falls in the category of Seismic Zone 4 and 5. Earthquakes of magnitude 8 or more can also occur here, while the earthquake resistant aspect needs more attention in construction works.

Why does earthquake happen?

There are 7 plates inside the earth, which are constantly rotating. Where these plates collide more, it is called a zone fault line. The corners of the plates are twisted due to repeated collisions. When pressure builds up, the plates break. The energy below finds a way out and the disturbance is followed by an earthquake.
