Taiwan is a small island just below China, like Sri Lanka to India. Only the size of Kerala. The population is two crore forty lakhs. The capital is Taipei. Although there are eight regional languages, Chinese is the official language. 95.7 percent are of Han descent, as in China. The main religions are Buddhism and Taoism.
It is about sixty percent of the population. 26 percent have no religion. 3.9 percent are Christians. The old name of Taiwan was ‘Formosa’ which means beautiful island. Later it became Tai Wan. No matter what angle you look at it, Taiwan is a small China.
The island was under Japanese occupation from 1895 to 1945. After their defeat in World War II, they came under the control of China. Most of the countries of the world, including the United States and India, have accepted that Taiwan is a part of China. Taiwan’s official name is still the ‘Republic of China’. Taiwan was ruled as the seat of the Chinese government by the Kuomintang, who were defeated by the Communists in a civil war in 1949. In Poipok, the Kuomintang smuggled all of China’s then gold reserves to Taiwan. Taiwan was a member of the UN and the Security Council as China. It was only after two decades that the United States and others accepted that the People’s China is the real China. In 1971, China became a member of the UN and the Security Council.
Since then, China has not been willing to grant full independence to Taiwan. While China was dominated by the Communist Party, Taiwan introduced multi-party democratic governance. Although Taiwan has achieved great growth since the 1960s, it has not been freed from China’s grip. Taiwan is still dominated by China, as is Hong Kong. Just like their own state.
It is not possible for the rest of the world to establish direct diplomatic relations with Taiwan. Only 13 of the 193 UN member states have formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan. Others are connected through representative offices. Anyone who goes beyond that will create an atmosphere of war. That’s what happened with the current Nancy Pelosi visit. One more thing needs to be mentioned here.
There are a large number of people in Taiwan who oppose such visits, no matter who attempts them. Among them are those who fear China and love China’s hand-wringing. Anyway, for China, touching Taiwan is like touching China and all this has been accepted by the world. Keeping these things in mind, we have to evaluate the current events.
