State universities should function under government policies: Stalin

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said that the government-run universities here should take up activities as per the policy decisions of the state governments and vice-chancellors should act accordingly. Addressing the vice-chancellors’ conference organized at Anna University on Tuesday, Stalin reiterated that the Tamil Nadu government opposes NEET and the National Education Policy (NEP). Meanwhile, Stalin shared the same platform with Prime Minister Modi in the convocation held last month. Stalin made these comments in the context of Governor RN Ravi holding meetings with the Vice Chancellors recently and putting pressure on them for NEP.
Matters related to law
Stalin recalled that his assembly had already passed a law empowering the state government to appoint vice-chancellors to state-run universities. It is stated that this decision was taken based on the recommendations of the Poonchi Commission set up by the Central Government. “It is related to the rights of the state government. The right to education in state universities is the right of the government to be elected by the people. So the universities have to work under the policy decisions of the state government. The vice chancellors should act accordingly’ he commented.
