A magistrate’s court on Friday declared the election of JD(S) councilor Ravi Shankar to the local body invalid. The court found that despite having a BPL card, Ravi Shankar had not disclosed in the affidavit that he had jewelery worth 500 kg.

Senior Civil Judge and Judicial Magistrate Geetanjali ji found ward-9 councilor of Sira Municipal Council Ravi Shankar guilty of suppressing facts in his election affidavit.

Congress candidate M. Krishnappa, who was defeated in the election, had filed a petition in the court on 30 December 2021 after the election to the Municipal Council in Sira.

It was alleged that Ravi Shankar hid the fact in his election affidavit that he was convicted in criminal cases. It was also alleged against him that he had 500 kg of gold and received Rs 3.6 lakh from rent even though he had a Below Poverty Line (BPL) card.

Ravi Shankar told the court that he had forgotten to mention about the old criminal cases. He claimed that he had 499.5 kg of silver and only 500 grams of gold. But he did not mention them together in the affidavit.
