Thiruvananthapuram: In protest against the arrest of leaders in 15 states by the NIA in 15 states, the people of Kerala were terrorized by the popular front’s lightning hartal yesterday. The activists wearing helmets and covering their faces arrived on bikes and pelted stones and petrol bombs, adding terror to the attack. The stone was brought in bags.
70 KSRTC bus vandalized. A bullet hit two policemen in Kollam. Cargo vehicles and private vehicles were vandalized. A lorry driver, a native of Varkala, was injured in a stone pelting in Kozhikode. The attack took place when the lorry was parked in fear. A bomb was hurled at the RSS office in Mattannur, Kannur. Debt markets were forcibly closed in many places. Those who came to close the shops in Payyannur were beaten up by intolerant locals. 170 people were arrested. 368 people were taken into custody. 157 cases were taken up.
Police witnessed the violence in most places. Passengers were also injured in the stone pelting. Attempts were also made to attack those traveling in private vehicles. Police and protesters clashed in Eratupetta.
A few taxis and auto-rickshaws plyed the road but stopped running for fear of stone pelting. Most of the business establishments in the Malabar region remained closed. Government offices and schools were open but attendance was poor. Petrol stations and banks were operational.
A petrol bomb was thrown at a vehicle carrying a newspaper at Narayanpara in Kannur Uli. Panchayat secretary’s vehicle was vandalized in Punnayurkulam, lottery shop in Kottayam and Milma booth in Kannur. There were masked attacks on hotels in Ernakulam and Kottayam.
KSRTC buses were mostly attacked in Kozhikode, Wayanad, Thiruvananthapuram, Alappuzha, Kollam, Thrissur and Kannur districts. Drivers were injured in Kozhikode, Kannur and Thiruvananthapuram. Eight buses vandalized in Thiruvananthapuram. The windows of the Mookambika-bound Swift bus were broken in Valapatnam. 15-year-old Anakha was not injured in the stone pelting.
