Kamrup News: A woman from southern Assam’s Hailakandi district was arrested on Tuesday night for allegedly killing her three-year-old step-daughter.

The arrested woman has been identified as Hasna Begum Mazumdar, who is accused of poisoning her step-daughter. According to sources, the incident allegedly took place at Damcherra under Ramnathpur police station in Hailakandi district near the Assam-Mizoram border, about 65 km from Hailakandi town.

Najmul Hussain Barbhuiya, a resident of Damcherra, had married a woman named Hasna Begum Talukdar of Jamira Basti (Hailakandi district) according to Islamic rituals about five years ago. After two years of marriage, both of them got divorced and the daughter started living with the father. Later, the person later married the accused, who was a resident of Jhalancherra in Hailakandi district.

On Tuesday, Hasna allegedly poisoned the child when her husband left the house. The girl was reportedly taken to Jameera police post and then shifted to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for treatment. However, the 3-year-old girl died in the hospital and her stepmother was arrested by the police.

Meanwhile, Additional Superintendent of Police, Hailakandi Bidyut Das Boro said that the woman has been arrested. The ASP said that further legal process is being initiated.
