The world’s largest gemstone known to have been found in Sri Lanka has been confirmed to be worth less than the previously quoted value.

This matter has been confirmed in the Cabinet Committee of the Sri Lankan Parliament.

This was confirmed when officials of Gems and Gold Jewelery Authority were summoned before the Cobb Committee and questioned.

Cobb committee member Anura Priyadarshana Yappa said that the manner in which the officials of Gems and Gold Jewelery Authority acted in this matter was not befitting of its expertise.

“There has been a lot of talk about gemstone necklaces in the past. However, the stone will not be sold and has been brought back. We have observed that such clusters are found everywhere. Why did you do such a lie?” Anura Priyadarshana Yappa questioned the authorities of Ratnakkal and Thangaparana Authority.

Officials replied that the stone weighs 510 kilograms and cannot be split into pieces. In addition, officials mentioned that this stone has also received the Guinness record of being the largest gemstone in the world.

The gem was valued at USD 10 million, the responsible officials had earlier said. In this case, it has now been confirmed that its real value is only 10,700 US dollars in the end, said Anura Priyadarshana Yappa, a member of the Cobb Committee.

Anura Priyadarshana Yappa says that the same official who first calculated the value as 10 million US dollars, later reduced the value to 10,700 US dollars and signed the report.

Viraj de Silva, Chairman of Ratnakkal and Thangaparana Authority, made the comment on the occasion.

“Kinnus holds the record of being the largest gemstone necklace in the world. They tried to sell it by putting it on display. However, the sale could not be made. They have tried to bring it back to Sri Lanka and re-export it,” he says.

Cobb committee member Anura Priyadarshana Yappa interrupted and questioned Viraj de Silva, chairman of the Rathnakkal and Thangaparana Authority.

”I didn’t hear that. A person has made two different statements. One is USD 10 lakh and the other is USD 10,700. I am asking how such a difference can be made” he questioned.

Viraj de Silva, chairman of Ratnakkal and Thangaparana Authority, said, “We have appointed a committee to calculate the value of the second time.”

Professor Ranjat Bhandara, chairman of the Gob Committee, questioned the officials as to what is the real value of this.

“It has only real archaeological value. Because it can’t be strapped in,” replied an officer.

Prof. Ranjat Bhandara, chairman of the Gob Committee, said that it is useless to mislead the public and get the Kinnus record.

“I think it is inappropriate for professionals like you to mislead the public and say that they have achieved such a feat and now have only archaeological value.”

Background to the discovery of the gemstone

This gemstone was found in the year 2021 from Kahavathi area of Ratnapuri district.

The gemstone thus extracted was first transported to Dubai and from there to Switzerland.

However, due to the fact that the stone could not be sold, the gemstone pendant was brought back to the country.

Information has now come out that the said stone in this condition is worthless as already stated.
