In the 19th century, another conflict was going on in the belly of freedom struggle in India, a multicultural country. It was a struggle for humanity, a fight for the basic rights to live as a human being. Architect of Indian Constitution Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar was the leader of the human liberation struggle. At the end of the 20th century, when the discussion about who made a mark on this century started from the media, academics and from the point of view of some organizations, Gandhiji’s name undoubtedly came up. At the same time, not only India, but from some Western and South Asian countries, Dr. Ambedkar’s name came up. Because in a country like India, in the name of caste-religion, when the brothers and sisters of their own society were being treated as untouchables, they took a brave stand to raise their voice against it.

For many years, there has been a global debate about the black people in America and the continued apartheid regime in many countries in Africa. The upper castes in India were taking a stance on social inequality such as racism, racialism or white supremacy, but they refused to present it on the world stage. At the award-winning United Nations anti-racism conference in Durban, South Africa, representatives of the Indian government were unwilling to raise the issue of casteism and untouchability in India. The issue was taken up by many social organizations and their representatives who came there and it started to be discussed through Nidan. All this brainstorming at the global level had a great support, it was Dr. Ambedkar’s thoughts and various works written by him on the subject. The speech he wrote for the Jatpat Todak Mandal in Lahore was rejected by the organizers there. Babasaheb then made a book of this speech, which is in front of us today in the form of ‘Elimination of Caste’. Apart from this, Babasaheb wrote a very basic book like ‘Cast in India’.

Babasaheb’s books on economic and social subjects are available in the libraries of various universities of the world today. Practitioners, researchers and scholars of different countries are using it, writing and speaking on it. We can see the global perspective in Babasaheb’s writings and thoughts from the very beginning. Babasaheb’s studies and research in two institutions, particularly Columbia University in America and then the London School of Economics in England, gave a new aspect to the ideological approach to social struggle. Babasaheb’s three-year study period at Columbia University is a great chapter of knowledge. During this period, Babasaheb was writing books and studying continuously in the library there. John Dewey, the world-famous professor there, looked at his inquisitive student state with great admiration. He was a favorite student of Professor Dewey and Professor Edwin Selingman, theorizers of education and democracy.

Babasaheb completed his research and studies under the guidance of these two professors. Professor Dewey’s lectures and guidance helped Babasaheb’s basic thinking on democracy. Professor Dui was underlining that democracy will not succeed simply by giving the right to vote, but it essentially requires education and an informed citizenry and their organization. We can see a big impression of this on Babasaheb’s overall thoughts. Interestingly, Prof. He also mentioned that he was indebted to Dewey’s ideas in a speech written for the session of the Caste Separation Board. Babasaheb’s position regarding women’s rights and their self-esteem in the future was also sown in his studies at Columbia University. Today, some study centers related to Professor Dewey have been established in America and other countries. On that occasion, once again, Babasaheb’s thoughts and his important contribution to the Indian Constitution are being churned out everywhere. Two years ago Dr. Savitribai Phule Pune University. The Babasaheb Ambedkar Studies Center has started the Professor John Dewey Studies Center in collaboration with Professor Scott Stroud of the University of Texas. Professor Stroud has provided a bibliography of John Dewey for this centre.

Both Columbia University and the London School of Economics have kept Babasaheb’s memory alive. Columbia University has continued the ideological brainstorming of Babasaheb’s literature through ‘Ambedkar Initiative’ in its curriculum. In 1952, Columbia University awarded Babasaheb an honorary D. Lit. was done while giving Babasaheb’s book ‘Annihilation of Caste’ is available on Columbia University website. Babasaheb’s incomplete autobiography ‘Waiting for a Visa’, a small book, has been included in the curriculum by the university. On the centenary year of Babasaheb’s birth, the university erected a bust of him at the entrance of its library. While coming and going to that library, many scholars from all over the world take some point of Babasaheb’s inspiration with them. The residence where Babasaheb lived in London while studying at the London School of Economics was converted into a memorial by the Maharashtra government through the efforts of then Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Last year in the ‘Gray’s Inn’, the highest law education in London, Dr. Ambedkar Dalan was erected. A beautiful oil painting of Babasaheb has been installed there. Educational training activities will be conducted in this hall. It was from this ‘Grey’s Inn’ that Babasaheb took the title of ‘Barrister’.

In the context of modern times, Babasaheb, who accepted the Buddha Dhamma and carried that thought forward, is also remembered from countries like Sri Lanka and Japan. Buddhist societies are functioning on a large scale in both the countries. Babasaheb went to Colombo on June 5, 1950. In the speech given there, he discussed the rise, spread and decline of Buddha Dhamma. A statue of Babasaheb has also been erected in Koyasan University in Japan. In European countries, a group of gypsies called Roma in Hungary were treated like untouchables. These social classes, who were somewhat nomadic, were disturbed by this disparate treatment. He came to India and Dr. Studied Ambedkar’s thoughts and then started organizational work from Babasaheb’s thought that education will lead the way. The ‘Bhim Network’ established in Hungary started three high schools there and named them Dr. Ambedkar’s name is given. On the occasion of Babasaheb’s 125th birth anniversary, the United Nations also honored Babasaheb’s contribution to social and economic democracy. Since April 14, 2016, every year on the occasion of Babasaheb’s birth anniversary, tributes are paid to him in the United Nations.

Since Babasaheb’s original book writing is in English, it is widely researched and discussed in America and the Western world. Suraj Yengde, a young scholar in America, writes on Babasaheb’s books and contemporary issues of Dalits in national and international journals. Today, in many countries, there are many classes that suffer from injustice in various small and large groups. Babasaheb has always been a beacon for such proletariats. However, the socio-economic democracy envisioned by Babasaheb has not yet been established. Therefore, everyone needs to commit to it once again while remembering Babasaheb. Recently, this universal money of Babasaheb’s knowledge is expanding even more. There is no doubt that their path of knowledge will help India in every way.
