The Pope recalled that as a monk, abbot, bishop and pope, Pius VII remained unwavering in his devotion to God and the Church, even though he suffered great sacrifices. The Pope explained that the fundamental values of collective witness and compassion, which were evident in his life, are essential in our personal and social life journey as well.
The Pope said that Pope Pius VII was a person who stood firm for unity in times of severe struggles and divisions, and even when he was publicly scorned, he radiated a message of dedication and love for the Church, and the people of God responded to that message with enthusiasm.
Explaining the value of witness in his life, Pope Francis stated that the meek Pope Pius VII was a courageous preacher of the Gospel through words and deeds. Referring to the third value of mercy, the Pope said that Pius VII, who overcame the heavy obstacles created by Napoleon’s rule and paid special attention to the protection of the poor, stood out for his innovative and far-reaching social reforms of the time.
