Rome – Reports say that the Cambridge University student who was killed in Egypt after being mistaken for a spy was tortured and brutalized. This was disclosed by the medical expert of the prosecution team at the trial in Rome in the death of Giulio Regeni (28), an Italian citizen who was killed in Cairo in 2016.

A post-mortem revealed scars of razor cuts all over the body. Severe burns on the body. Marks of cuts and bruises were found on the body as a result of beating with sticks. There were more than 24 fractures in the body. The ribs, all the fingers and the shoulders were broken. Multiple injuries were also seen on Rajeni’s feet. There were injuries from a sharp weapon, suspected to be a razor blade, on several parts of the body. Signs of cigarette burns were also found.

The cause of death was a brain haemorrhage after Regeni’s neck bone was fractured in the brutal beating. Regeni, from Fumicello, a town near Udine in northeastern Italy, was identified by his nose. Paola Defendi, Regeni’s mother, said that her body and face were unrecognizable due to the beating.

Regeni was brutally assaulted by four Egyptian intelligence agents, whom Italian prosecutors accuse of complicity in the murder. But they could not be found to issue summons. As a result, they are tried in absentia. The second and most recent trial began in February this year. Regeni’s mother, father and sister attended the trial. On January 25, 2016, Regeni was found dead nine days later after visiting a friend in her flat near Behouz metro station in Cairo. The body was found naked from the waist down in a ditch along the desert highway between Cairo and Alexandria.

Regeni came to Cairo to research independent unions in Egypt for her doctoral thesis. Regeni was also interested in the long-term dominance of the state and military over Egypt’s economy. It was also discovered that Regeni wrote anti-government articles for the left-wing Italian newspaper Il Manifesto under the pen name Regeni.

In February, prosecutors said they had evidence to show that Major Magdi Sharif from Egypt’s General Intelligence tipped Regeni to follow him and eventually arrested him at a Cairo metro station. The Egyptian government admitted in 2016 that the student was under surveillance. The family denied Italian press reports that Regeni may have worked for Italian intelligence.
