Montreal: Three Canadian police officers have been charged with manslaughter in the 2020 Ontario shooting that killed a one-and-a-half-year-old child.
On November 26, 2020, Jameson Shapiro, a one-and-a-half-year-old boy, was shot dead by the police. Shapiro was riding in a pickup truck with his father when the shooting occurred. The shooting took place near Lake Kawartha, 100 kilometers north of Toronto. The child was shot during a shootout between the police and Shapiro’s father. The child died instantly.
The police reached the spot following information that the father was taking the child illegally. They tried to stop the father and a shootout ensued. The father was seriously injured in the firing and later died while undergoing treatment. A police officer was also injured in the firing.
The Special Investigation Unit had found the police officers guilty in the incident. Federal agency officials who approved it were convicted. All three officials are scheduled to appear in an Ontario court on Oct. 6.
