Beijing: Mikhail Gorbachev, the last leader of the Soviet Union, died on Tuesday. He was 91 years old and was suffering from several ailments. Countries around the world have paid tribute to Gorbachev on his death. Many global leaders lauded his role in promoting peace and advancing freedom. Gorbachev was the only leader of Russia, whom most people in his own country see as a villain. At the same time, in Western countries, he is remembered as a hero and peace loving leader. But in China, Gorbachev’s legacy is seen in a different light. Like in Russia, in China, Gorbochev is held responsible for the collapse of the Soviet Union. This is the reason why China mourned the death of Gorbachev, but his efforts to increase reconciliation with America were also criticized on the social media of this country. The Cold War ended due to Gorbachev’s policies, but due to his reforms the Soviet Union broke up in many parts and new countries like Ukraine, Belarus were born.

China expressed grief over the death, but there was criticism too
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said in his reaction to Gorbachev’s death that Gorbachev had made a positive contribution to the normalization of Sino-Soviet relations. “We mourn the death of Gorbachev and extend our condolences to his family,” he said. Gorbachev advocated a policy of open discussion on political and social issues. He also supported ‘Perestroika’ which is a policy of political and economic reforms. The Communist Party of China (CPC) considers it a naive attempt to open up the economy of a socialist country (Soviet Union) which politics has long expressed as a cautionary tale for the fall of the ruling Communist Party: the Soviet Union. Which created political and economic disorder, which led to the collapse of the United Socialist Soviet Republics (USSR).

Global Times counts mistakes on Gorbachev’s death
China’s state-run Global Times wrote that the West remembers and praises him (Gorbachev) for his role in bringing the Soviet Union closer to the West and ending the Cold War, while Chinese analysts see him as such. Believes individuals who have put principles aside. The newspaper wrote that he had made a mistake in assessing the international situation and created chaos in the domestic economy, which is a lesson for the rest of the countries to be alert to the attempts of peaceful revolution by Western powers. In the historical context, Gorbachev was immature, representing the historical transition period of Russia (being part of the Soviet Union). The paper wrote that the Soviet Union lost its independence by adopting the Western system without thinking, and the Russians faced political instability and severe economic pressure, which China considers a warning and a lesson.

Gorbachev told the situation at the time of the breakup of the Soviet Union
Speaking on the disintegration of the Soviet Union in recent years, Gorbachev said that there was nothing in his speeches to the end that supported the breakup of the vast transcontinental country. He called it an incident that happened due to the betrayal of several politicians. Gorbachev said in an interview to the BBC that he was cheated behind his back. They were burning the whole house to light cigarettes. Just to get power…they couldn’t do it democratically, so they committed a crime. All that was a rebellion. We were on the brink of civil war. People were divided. There was a state of conflict in the country. There was an influx of weapons. This also included nuclear weapons. I couldn’t see all this happening to cling to power. Because of this I resigned. Mikhail Gorbachev was deposed as the President of the Soviet Union on 25 December 1991.

The disintegration of the Soviet Union was a big lesson for the Chinese Communist Party.
Many former Soviet nations declared independence under Gorbachev’s watch. His work has made that era the subject of intense study of the Chinese Communist Party for decades. Chinese President Xi Jinping is believed to have closely observed the circumstances that led to the collapse of the Soviet Union. This is the reason why they keep advocating the supremacy of one party and one position over every institution in China. In October itself, he is to be elected leader of the Chinese Communist Party for the third time in a row. After this, the way for him to become the President of China will also be cleared. This would be the first time after Mao, that a leader would become President of China for three consecutive terms.

Xi Jinping told why the USSR broke up
During his decade in power, Xi has valued the Communist Party’s central authority in daily life. He described socialist ideology as important for the rise of China. Jinping also supported crackdown on any element of society deemed by the party to be potential supporters of Western-style democracy. In a 2013 speech to party cadres, months after coming to power, Xi asked why the Soviet Union and its ruling Communist Party had collapsed. His answer was clear. Xi said that ideological confusion as a political struggle within the country negated the history of the Soviet Union, its party, and former leaders such as Lenin and Joseph Stalin. Xi said party organizations at all levels had almost no influence, and even the military was no longer led by the party. In the end, the Soviet Communist Party, such a large party, fell apart.
