Former President of the Philippines

Ramon Magsaysay, former President of the Philippines, was born on August 31, 1907. He is best known for defeating the communist-led Hukbalahap (Huk) movement. It was Magsaysay, the seventh president, who restored peace and order to the country after the Philippine crisis and Hukbalahap rebellion in the 1950s.

He was the first Philippine president from the landless lower middle class. Magsaysay remained a close friend and supporter of the United States in foreign policy. He was also an outspoken advocate against communism during the Cold War.

past life

Born on August 31, 1907, in Iba, Zambales, to Exiquel Magsaysay, a carpenter, and Perfecta del Fierro, a schoolteacher. He spent his childhood in Castillejos, Zambales before joining the University of the Philippines in 1927.

While studying engineering, Magsaysay worked as a driver. Later, he moved to the Institute of Commerce (1928-1922) at Jose Rizal College. There he graduated in commerce. He then worked as an automobile mechanic and shop superintendent. At the outbreak of World War II, he joined the motor pool of the 31st Infantry Division of the Philippine Army.

Political life

Ramon Magsaysay started his political career in 1946 when he joined the Liberal Party. Although a liberal, the Nationalist Party supported him for the presidency against Quirino in the 1953 elections. He also got the support of a third party, Carlos P. Romulo.

Little known facts

Magsaysay made the Philippines a member of the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization established in Manila on September 8, 1954.

Despite the support of Congress in July 1955, Magsaysay was unable to enact effective land reform legislation.
